We are a startup of scientists and engineers who believe passionately that carbon removal is important for the protection and preservation of the environment. Our team is remote-first, with research efforts focused in the Orca Basin off the coast of Louisiana.

Dave Johnson
CEO and Cofounder
Dave's passion for carbon removal solutions led him to cofound Carboniferous in 2021, and his background in tech and science has informed his efforts to bring the company's unique MACS process to market. He was cofounder and CTO of the startup Avametric, leading the development of its AR-powered 3D shopping app from initial prototype to acquisition by Gerber Technology. Following the acquisition, Dave served as VP of product for Gerber's software division. Dave studied physics and computer science at Brown and Stanford Universities. An avid skier and sailor, he lives in California's Bay Area.

Allison Matzelle
Ocean Operations Manager
Allison leads engineering, logistics, and regulatory policy for Carboniferous's science and research programs at sea. She has a wealth of policy experience from the perspective of regulators, environmental non-profits, and legislators, including as a Knauss marine policy fellow in the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee specializing in issues covering science, oceans, fisheries, and weather. Allison holds a PhD in Marine and Environmental Sciences from Northeastern University. She lives in Michigan and is a former oyster farmer as well as an equestrian, kayaker, and SCUBA diver.

Morgan Reed Raven
Chief Science Officer
Morgan leads the Carboniferous scientific research program and advises on environmental monitoring strategy. She is also an Associate Professor of biogeochemistry in the Earth Science Department at the University of California Santa Barbara. She received her PhD in Environmental Science and Engineering from Caltech in 2016 and her B.A.S./M.S. in Geology and Environmental Science from Stanford in 2006. At UCSB, she leads the NOISE Lab, which investigates mechanisms of organic carbon breakdown in low-oxygen environments with funding from NSF, NASA, and private foundations. For fun, she loves to hike in the mountains and think about sulfur isotopes.
